Sabarmati Ashram Goshala

Sabarmati Ashram Goshala is a unit of NDDB Dairy Services situated at Bidaj, Gujarat. NDDB Dairy Services is a not-for-profit Company under section 25 of the Companies Act and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NDDB. It functions as a delivery arm of the NDDB for field operations relating to promoting Producer Companies and Productivity Services.

Sabarmati Ashram Gaushala has a unique mission to promote sustainable livestock development in the country. Founded in Ahmedabad in 1915 by Mahatma Gandhi as part of the Harijan Ashram and later handed over to the National Dairy Development Board in 1973 for professional management, the organization has traversed a long path to reach a state of excellence in the field of animal husbandry and agriculture. It represents the realization of a vision, creativity, commitment and the toil of a dedicated workforce fully supported by NDDB.

Since its inception, the organization has been striving to address this matter through the acquisition of resources, knowledge, technology and infrastructure required for the production of quality genetics. Our core activities of frozen semen production, bull production, breed conservation and preservation of germplasm and support activities like fodder and fodder seed production and manpower training and development are tailored to meet the organizational goals of enhancing the productivity of cattle and buffaloes in the country.

Our Achievements

Sabarmati Ashram Goshala is among the 4 mega semen stations owned/managed by NDDB Dairy Services. We produce Bovine frozen semen doses under the brand  “Superior Animal Genetics” (SAG^TM). Produced using advanced genetics and strict adherence to Minimum Standard Protocols as enshrined by Govt. of India, SAG^TM has evolved as the top-selling Bovine semen brand in the country.

Over the years, the upgradation of technology coupled with human skills and an eco-friendly infrastructure has helped us to evolve and stabilize a frozen semen production system that has now set new benchmarks in production. We have achieved fair success in harnessing bull power through a holistic and systematic approach to breeding sire management. Processing protocols were continually refined and procedural errors were minimized through in-house quality audits. The need to produce and sell high-quality products and increase the efficiency of the production process led to putting in place quality assurance systems – Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Management Practices and Total Quality Management (TQM).

Experts have reviewed these processes periodically. Innovations of value were adopted into the system. The ISO 9001:2015 certification awarded by M/s BVQI, UK, an internationally reputed certifying agency vindicated our continual efforts to achieve and maintain high-quality standards. Notwithstanding this, we still see immense potential for growth and continual improvement in all quality parameters related to frozen semen production.

Our Bulls

Our Sire Directory boasts of 300 bulls, with 260 adults and 40 young bulls. The highest dam’s yield among them is 19548 litres. We also maintain a whopping 22 breeds of cattle and 3 breeds of buffalo, making us the only semen station in India with 17  native breeds.
